Kathmandu. The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has said it has started homework to reduce arrears of Rs 755.17 billion through a ‘fast track’.
The committee said that the government is going to facilitate the policy as questions have been raised on the efficiency of the government bodies due to the lack of settlement of large amounts.TAG_OPEN_div_22
Committee Chair Bharat Bahadur Khadka said that questions have been raised about the efficiency and working style of the government bodies due to increase in arrears with the public bodies over the years.TAG_OPEN_div_20
“It’s not just about arrears all the time. It has become necessary to move ahead by making efforts to end arrears forever, in the first phase, the committee is working to bring reforms in policy by holding detailed discussion with the government bodies about the status and reasons of arrears,” he said.
The 63rd annual report of the Auditor General shows arrears of Rs 378 TAG_OPEN_div_16.53 billion under the federal government alone. Similarly, there is arrears of Rs 33.96 billion under the provincial government and Rs 220.47 billion under the local level. Similarly, Rs 122.19 billion is unpaid under the committees and other institutions.
According to the report of the Auditor General, the arrears under the Ministry of Finance amounted to Rs 37.63 billion while the arrears under the erstwhile Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport amounted to Rs 7.10 billion.TAG_OPEN_div_14
Similarly, the erstwhile Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation has arrears amounting to Rs 1.53 billion, the Ministry of Forest and Environment Rs 1.34 billion and the erstwhile Ministry of Communications and Information Technology Rs 1.166 billion.TAG_OPEN_div_12
