Floods swept away fields while harvesting paddy

Gandaki. The paddy in the field was turning yellow by swinging. The farmers were in a hurry to bring paddy before Dashain. However, a few days ago, the flood in the Daram river not only took away the paddy crop but also washed away the field.

The farmers of Galkot Municipality-9 of Baglung are forced to bear the brunt of nature at this time. The farmers are deeply worried as the lush paddy fields have turned into barren lands. Purushottam Gautam of Phaparkhet said that his 18 muri paddy fields in Zhetung have been washed away by the floods.

} “The flood has swept away all the fields without a trace, the fields earned by my ancestors have collapsed, my heart is heavy,” he said, “The produce of the fields used to sustain the family, this time nature has deceived us, who will listen to our voice?”

The flood has destroyed four ropanis of his field where he used to grow 12 muri of paddy. “The flood also swept away all the fields that were planted when the paddy was harvested,” he said. The farmers are in distress after the flood swept away their fields during the time of bringing paddy, the main food crop, said ward chairperson Thapa. He said that the destruction of fertile land for good crops would have a negative impact on the agricultural system of the village.

Thapa said that necessary process has been initiated through the ward office to provide relief to the affected farmers by collecting the details of the damage caused by the floods. Ward Chairman Pham Khatri said that around 20 ropanis of land in Galkot-3 have also been damaged by the floods. He said that although there was no human loss in Galkot, there was a big loss of life and public property.TAG_OPEN_div_30

Bharat TAG_OPEN_div_28 Sharma Gaire, mayor of the municipality, said that the Daramkhola has eroded the fields in wards 3, 5, 6, 8 and 9 of Galkot. He said that it has been decided to provide a relief of Rs 4,000 equivalent to one ropani of paddy fields to the farmers who have been cut down.

“We are providing compensation ranging from Rs 4,000 to Rs 16,000 to the farmers for the damage caused to the paddy crops by the floods,” he said, “We have made immediate relief arrangements to the flood-affected people on behalf of the municipality and we will take forward the reconstruction in a planned manner.” He said that the exact details of the damage are being collected.

According to the preliminary information, 22 houses and sheds have been damaged due to floods and landslides. Commercial structures including resorts have also been damaged, said Gaire. “Along with the farms, agriculture, farms and livestock have also been damaged by the floods,” he said, adding that continuous efforts are being made to provide relief and compensation to them.
