Jhapa. Deu Kumar Lingden of Bhadrapur Municipality-1 is ready to sell mustard vegetables at his farm. This year, he has planted mustard greens in one bigha of land in two places.
“We produce around four to five quintals of milk every day,” said Lingden, adding, “We sell at Rs 100 to Rs 120 per kg in the market.” It seems that there will be a lot of income this time. ’
He said that he has set a target of selling 30 lakhs of greens this season. “We expect to make a profit of Rs 1 million after deducting investment and expenses,” said Lingden, adding, “Last year, we had earned Rs 1.8 million from vegetable farming in 15 katthas.” ’
Lingden, who returned home after staying in Malaysia for 11 years in course of foreign employment, started Lingden Agriculture Farm in 2073 BS with the aim of starting a business with his family in the country. Since then, he has been earning a lot by selling greens every year.
The vegetables produced by Lingden are not only sold in Chandragadhi and Bhadrapur but also in the agricultural wholesale market of Birtamod Municipality. He has also been involved in fish farming in 10 ponds. Greens are also being produced in the same fish pond. According to Lingden, his experience of working in vegetable and floriculture while working in Malaysia has made it easier to do something in his own country.
Commercial farming in Bhadrapur-1 provides employment to 18 people. They help in plucking, fertilizing, picking and transporting the vegetables to the market. “Initially, we started producing greens from two katthas to see if it would be profitable. After the production and its demand were good, I expanded the farming to one bigha of land. I am benefiting from off-season farming rather than seasonal farming,” Lingden said.
He said that he has always been producing seasonal greens in the months of July and August as others also produce greens in the months of October-November.
