Kathmandu. The Melamchi water supply is expected to arrive in the Kathmandu Valley only in the last week of September this year.
Executive Director of Melamchi Water Supply Development Committee, Jagannath Das said the water level in the river has increased due to rainfall.
“The water level has not receded. Preparations are underway to bring water once the water level recedes. Das said that the Melamchi water is being supplied to the Kathmandu Valley only in winter after the headworks of the project were completely damaged by the flood and landslide in the Melamchi River on Asar 1, 2078 BS. According to him, it has been difficult to transport the Melamchi water to the Kathmandu Valley as it has been raining heavily every day since some days.
According to Das, around 170 to 180 million liters of water is being diverted daily from Melamchi River to Kathmandu but now 6 to 70 million liters of water is being diverted daily from the Ribarma rivulet to Kathmandu after the Melamchi source was closed due to floods.
“The Melamchi water supply was stopped in June. Now we are distributing water from the Ribarma River. ”
A total of 170 million liters of water was distributed daily in the Kathmandu Valley on March 29, 2021. However, the project has not been able to supply water throughout the year after the floods in Melamchi and Indrawati in June and July 2078 caused huge damage to the project.
Ashok Kumar Poudel, executive director of Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL), said that there is a demand of 430 million liters of water every day. He said that only 13 to 140 million litres of water is supplied to Kathmandu Valley daily from various sources when the Melamchi drinking water has been closed.
