Kathmandu. The average daily expenditure of tourists visiting Nepal has decreased by 19 percent. According to the Economic Survey released by the government recently, the expenditure has decreased despite the arrival of tourists.

Nepal Tourism Entrepreneurs’ Association President Kumar Mani Thapaliya viewed that it would be difficult to achieve the goal of country’s prosperity through tourism if tourists did not spend money. According to him, tourists coming to Nepal are compelled to spend more on travel, so there is no situation to spend it openly. “A transport ticket costs three thousand dollars. In such a situation, the money that tourists spend a lot of money will be deducted,” he said, “We have not been able to create an environment for tourists to spend.” ”

Thapaliya, president of the association, pointed out the need of making a provision of luxury package to make the tourists spend and implement it. He argues that the base of the tourists’ spending will increase if the road is made comfortable, the artistic infrastructure is built and the travel fee is reduced.

According to the Economic Survey 2082-83 presented by Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Wagle on Wednesday, tourists spent only 33.08 US dollars in 2025 compared to 40.84 US dollars in the last fiscal year. In this way, the average daily expenditure of tourists coming to Nepal has decreased by 19 percent.

According to the survey, from 2025 onwards, the Department of Immigration has made arrangements to automatically count the arrival and departure dates of tourists from the Central Electronic Tourism Management Information System (CTMIS).

The number of tourists visiting Nepal this year increased by 1.3 per cent to reach 162,365 as compared to the last year, according to the survey. A total of 1,147,548 tourists visited Nepal in 2024.

Around 60.2 percent of tourists visiting Nepal come for holidays and leisure. Statistics show that 14.4 per cent tourists visit the highest number of tourists, according to Thapaliya. According to him, 14.2 per cent tourists visit Nepal for trekking and 11.2 per cent for other purposes such as business, study, visit or other miscellaneous activities.

Thus, the length of stay of tourists visiting Nepal has also increased, the statistics show. The average duration of stay per tourist in 2024 was 13.30 days which has increased to 16.34 days in 2025. According to the statistics, around 293 tourists from India arrived in the year 2025.

Likewise, 113,000 people are importing from the US, 96,000 from China, 59,000 from the UK, 58,000 from Bangladesh, 50,000 from Australia, 38,000 from Sri Lanka, 30,000 from Thailand, 30,000 from Germany, 30,000 from Japan, and 371,000 from other countries.

The statistics show that the travel income increased by 4.8 percent in 2025. In the last fiscal year, the tourism sector had earned Rs 83.39 billion. Thamel Tourism Council Development Council Vice-Chairman Sahadev Dhamala said that the state could contribute to the gross domestic product only if tourists spend enough money. According to him, there is a shortage of quality shopping items for tourists at present.

He also said that Nepal needs to be systematic in providing services as per the aspirations of tourists. “The state should emphasize investment to strengthen service delivery and produce quality goods that tourists can buy,” he suggested.
