Kathmandu. Similarly, US Deputy Secretary of State Sarah B Rogers opined that American technology could play an important role in Nepal’s mountaineering sector.
Speaking at ‘The Ascent Summit’ organized by the US Embassy in Nepal, she stressed the need to further strengthen innovation, tourism, and technology collaboration between the US and Nepal.
“America is not only a nation of prosperity and opportunity but also a nation built for the spirit of adventure, exploration and innovation,” she said.
Recalling the historic moment in 1963 when American mountaineer Jim Whittaker climbed the Sagarmatha (Mt Everest) along with Nepali Sherpa Nawang Gombu, President Bhandari said that the incident further deepened the Nepal-US relations. According to him, the bilateral relations between the two countries have been continuously strengthened after more than six decades through tourism, education, business, technology and people-to-people exchanges.
On the occasion, Deputy Secretary Rogers said that security systems, communication equipment, drone technology, and modern technology related to campaign management developed by US companies were useful for mountain tourism. He said such technology would make important contributions in search and rescue, weather preparedness, logistics management and mountaineering safety.
Nepal received more than 1.15 million international tourists in 2025, of which around 112,000 came from the United States of America, she said. “American tourists have made a significant contribution to Nepal’s tourism industry, hotel business, service and local economy.”
Describing Nepal as a trusted partner of the US, Ms Rogers said the US remains committed to expanding collaboration in the areas of innovation, entrepreneurship, education, and secure technology solutions. The Himalayas would teach the world the lessons of courage, patience and cooperation, she said, adding these values also guide Nepal-US relations.
“Success in the mountains is not only determined by who you travel, but also by whom you travel,” she said. ”
