Kathmandu. Demonstrators blocked the road to Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium.
Protests erupted in the Mexican capital as fans flocked to the opening game, which is being co-hosted by the United States and Canada.
Thousands took part in Tuesday’s protests, which were spearheaded by a group that broke away from the CNTE teachers’ union after a week of protests.
Police on Thursday prevented the protesters from reaching the Azteca Stadium, where the opening match of the World Cup is being held. Thousands of police officers stepped up and security tightened around the stadium, breaking up the three-hour street demonstration and dispersing the demonstrators.
Mexico City’s security chief, Pablo Vazquez, said in a statement that the protests were peaceful. The protesting CNTE teachers’ union has been protesting since last week, demanding a pay hike and the withdrawal of the pension law.
Activist teachers have also set up a camp near the World Cup Fan Zone in Mexico City’s Zocalo Square. Teachers have also called for protests on Thursday, including by families of the disappeared.
Preparations have been completed for Mexico’s match against South Africa and the opening ceremony.
