. Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has said the government’s decision of imposing ‘luxury tax’ on education, health and electricity was not appropriate. Speaking at the Subarna Shumsher Economic Chain Programme organized on Sunday, he accused the government of imposing additional tax burden on the citizens indirectly through various headings.

Stating that it was the compulsion of the present Nepali society to send children to study in private schools or get treatment in private hospitals, Thapa said it would not be justified to impose additional tax linking it with luxury.TAG_OPEN_div_10 According to him, it would be wrong to impose tax in a manner that punishes those using private sector services when the educational status of government schools and access to services of government hospitals are not satisfactory.

} He said that even though the government seems to have given some concessions in income tax, it is trying to collect more money from the pockets of the citizens through other means. “Tax has been withdrawn from the back pocket as if tax has been exempted from the front pocket,” he said, expressing dissatisfaction over some provisions of the budget.

Thapa also directed the NC lawmakers to put forth a clear distinction between general reforms and structural reforms while participating in the discussion on the budget.TAG_OPEN_div_6 He said that serious discussion was needed on the issue of the long-term impact of the budget on the economy.
