Our missions oriented to economic diplomacy, trade promotion, investment, tourism, technology partnership: Foreign Minister Khanal

. Minister for Foreign Affairs Sishir Khanal has stressed the need for diplomacy to directly contribute to the economic transformation of the country. He also said that the incumbent government has laid special emphasis on effective and result-oriented development diplomacy.

In his address to the fifth edition of the ‘Prof Yadunath Khanal Lecture Series’ organised by the Ministry here today, he said competition among major powers in the world was intensifying, adding that economic means, supply chain and critical infrastructures were increasing their influence in the international relations.TAG_OPEN_div_57

“At the same time, emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and the digital economy, are redefining the global distribution of power and opportunity,” he said, adding that these changes present both challenges and opportunities for countries like Nepal.TAG_OPEN_div_55 ”

Stating that the multilateral system that has long provided an important safety net was coping with increasing pressure, he said new possibilities of cooperation, connectivity, technology and economic partnership were emerging.TAG_OPEN_div_53

“Nepal should face this changing situation with clarity, confidence and prudence,” he said.TAG_OPEN_div_51 “Our foreign policy should be based firmly on national interest by adapting to the evolving realities,” he said.

On the occasion, Minister Khanal said that Nepal was firmly committed to the objectives and principles of the UN Charter, Panchasheel, non-alignment and peaceful co-existence.TAG_OPEN_div_48 “These principles provide the basis for our external relations even today,” he said.

Minister Khanal said non-alignment should not be construed as passivity or isolation, as Prof Khanal has argued, it requires active involvement, strong decision making capacity and the ability to evaluate the international developments from the perspective of Nepal’s own interests.TAG_OPEN_div_46 Prof Khanal said that diplomacy would gain credibility through political stability and direct economic progress.

Minister Khanal stressed that the people have aspirations for more opportunities, development and prosperity and the foreign policy should serve these national aspirations in an increasing manner.TAG_OPEN_div_44 In this context, the government has placed good governance and rapid economic growth at the centre of its priorities. “Young people, in particular, expect results, opportunities and accountable institutions,” he said.

Stating that geopolitics is a permanent reality for Nepal, Minister Khanal said, “We should not see every issue only from the geopolitical perspective.TAG_OPEN_div_41 Overly cautious or narrow interpretation of external developments can sometimes limit our ability to seek legitimate opportunities for growth and cooperation. ”

Stressing that geography should not be seen as a mere limitation in an interconnected world, he said that when properly understood, it can act as a bridge between ideas, markets, people and opportunities.TAG_OPEN_div_39 “Our geographical location holds the potential for connectivity, trade, investment and regional cooperation,” he said.

Regarding Nepali Diaspora, he said the protection of Nepali citizens abroad was one of the main responsibilities of the government.TAG_OPEN_div_35 “Hundreds of thousands of Nepalis are living and engaged in employment abroad. They have not only contributed to the economy of the countries where they work but have also been supporting Nepal’s economy and society,” Minister Khanal said, adding, “Their security, respect and welfare is one of the top priorities of our foreign policy.” ”
