Over 150 containers stranded at customs due to road obstruction

Mustang. Containers with goods imported from China have been stranded at Nhechung Customs in Lomanthang Rural Municipality-4 of Korlana Naka after the road was blocked at various places along the Beni-Jomsom-Korala road, a national pride project, due to heavy rains.

Floods, landslides and river erosion have damaged 46 places along the Beni-Jomsom-Korala road section triggered by incessant TAG_OPEN_div_42 rainfall since Saturday night.

“There are more than 150 containers in the customs yard area of Korlanaka. Of them, 90 percent of the customs clearance process has been completed,” said Chudal, the customs chief, adding, “Some containers are in the process of being cleared at the customs and that too will be completed within two days.” He said that Korlanaka, which has become the only alternative route after the complete closure of Tatopani border point and Rasuwagadhi border point, has also been affected due to the rain.

Chudal said that the containers carrying goods to Korlana before the heavy rains had completed the customs clearance process but could not leave for their destination due to road obstruction. “New containers have not been added due to the obstruction of the road,” he said, adding that the containers imported from China have also not been able to come down due to the condition of the road.TAG_OPEN_div_36 ”

The state has been facing a loss in revenue collection due to floods, landslides and river erosion during the Dashain and Tihar import season from China, Chief Chudal said. According to him, the Mustang Customs Office at Korala Naka was collecting more than Rs 300 million in revenue daily when the Rasuwagadhi-Kerung border point was completely closed due to floods on August 26.

Similarly, around 200 electric vehicles have been stranded due to the blockage of the Korala section. According to the Armed Police Force No. 33 Battalion Jomsom, more than 100 vehicles have been stranded at Jomsom Bus Park as they have not been able to get down from Jomsom for the past five days.TAG_OPEN_div_30

According to the District Police Office, Mustang, the Jomsom-Korala section, which was obstructed due to rain, has come into operation from today. Information Officer and Police Inspector Santosh Basyal of the District Police Office said that the vehicular movement has resumed after five days with the efforts of Kaligandaki corridor, Waragung Mukti Chhetra, Loghekar Damodar Kunda Rural Municipality and security agencies to clear the landslide and clear the road.TAG_OPEN_div_28

According to the Beni-Jomsom-Korala road project, the road from Maldhunga to Beni of Myagdi, 25 from Beni to Annapurna-3 Rupse of Myagdi and 16 from Kavrebhir of Mustang to Korala have obstructed the road due to floods, landslides and river erosion. According to Project Chief Tejaswi Sharma, the road from Maldhunga to Galeshwor and from Dana to Korala Naka of Myagdi has come into operation after maintenance.TAG_OPEN_div_26

Project chief Tejashwi Sharma said that the repair and up-gradation of the road in Myagdi section of Korala is more complicated and challenging. He said that the road along Myagdi-Raghuganga and Baisari-1, 2, 3 and Siruwari have been completely damaged due to floods and landslides caused by heavy rains.TAG_OPEN_div_24

} Similarly, he said that the approach of the concrete bridge connecting Tatopani-Pokhrebagar of Myagdi section has been washed away by the flood. He said that it will take some time to repair and operate the roads in Tatopani, Khambhitta, Jalthale, Bhirkante and Mahabhir among other places due to floods and landslides. He said that there is a problem in managing road equipment and adequate manpower.
