Nepal seeks support of IPU member states on climate emergency agenda

Kathmandu. A Nepali parliamentary delegation that reached Arusha, Tanzania on the sidelines of the 153rd General Assembly of the Inter-Legislative Union (IPU) held discussions with the IPU Secretariat on the emergency agenda related to climate disasters.

In response to the recent floods in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers and the increasing risk of disasters in the Himalayan region due to climate change, Nepal has put forward an emergency agenda titled ‘Immediate Parliamentary Action to Respond to Climate Disasters and Strengthen Resilience in the Himalayan Region and Other Vulnerable Regions’.TAG_OPEN_div_18

During the discussion, emphasis was laid on reducing risk in areas affected by and vulnerable to climate-related disasters, disaster preparedness, enhancing resilience and making international parliamentary cooperation more effective.TAG_OPEN_div_16

TAG_OPEN_div_14 Nepal is preparing to garner the support of various member states to get the proposal passed by the IPU General Assembly. For this, the Nepali delegation has scheduled to hold discussions with the delegations of various member states tomorrow and seek votes in favor of the proposal.

Meanwhile, the Nepali parliamentary delegation led by Speaker Dol Prasad (DP) Aryal and the Australian delegation led by Speaker Milton Dick held bilateral meetings.TAG_OPEN_div_12

During the meeting, matters relating to further consolidating Nepal-Australia parliamentary relations, exchanging mutual experiences and expanding parliamentary cooperation in the days ahead, were discussed.TAG_OPEN_div_10
