Bhim Bahadur Singh, 77, a former ward member of Dodhara Chandani Municipality-4 in Kanchanpur, was found on Wednesday while inspecting a collapsed suspension bridge on the banks of the Mahakali. He was active in the construction of a suspension bridge connecting Dodhara Chandani till 2060 BS.

“Seeing this condition of the historic suspension bridge, it brought tears to my eyes,” Singh said, “It was the bridge that identified Dodhara Chandni in the country and abroad. We have lost an identity. ”

Singh said that the reconstruction of the bridge should not be delayed. “After the collapse of the bridge, not only the traffic but also the tourists as well as the nearby businessmen have been affected by it,” he said, adding, “The bridge has collapsed on the eve of Dashain and Tihar. ”

In the year 2022, a settlement was settled in Dodhara Chandani, which is adjacent to the border with India. In 2058 BS, the construction of a suspension bridge over the Mahakali River was started. Later, after the construction of the suspension bridge, the compulsion to come to Nepal via Indian route ended.

Singh said that after the construction of the bridge, the difficulty of going to the district headquarters and other places of the district through the boat and Banavasa bridge over the Mahakali river has ended. Until 2060 B.S., the locals had two options to travel by Indian road (Banavasa bridge) or by boat from the Mahakali river to Dodhara Chandani on the island across the Mahakali River.TAG_OPEN_div_43

After the construction of Asia’s second longest suspension bridge in Dodhara Chandani, which was once considered geographically remote in the district, its identity gradually became associated with development. After that, the construction of a four-lane bridge and access road over the Mahakali River and a dry port at Dodhara Chandani was started, and Dodhara Chandani moved forward economically.

Tika Bhatta, a local of Dodhara Chandani, said that although the four-lane concrete bridge has eased the inconvenience of the suspension bridge for some time, the people of Dodhara Chandni have a special relationship with the suspension bridge. “This bridge is not only connecting Bhimdatta and Dodhara Chandani municipality, it is also a tourist heritage in the far-west. Minister for Industry, Tourism, Forest and Environment of Sudurpaschim Province, Prakash Rawal, who reached the bridge site for inspection after the collapse of the suspension bridge at Dodhara Chandani, stressed the need to reconstruct the bridge over the Mahakali River at the earliest to prevent it from being deprived of major tourist destinations.TAG_OPEN_div_35
